Tetney 30/12/16

Birding with DW & TH today. On the humber were 13 Great Crested Grebe, the ever-dwindling Common Scoter flock down to just 9 birds, 2 Velvet Scoter, 7 Scaup, 4 Pochard and 38 Gadwall (the latter a record count). I couldn't make it 13 visits on the trot seeing Long-tailed Duck.
Birds of prey seen were 2 Hen Harrier, Peregrine and Merlin. Mist rolled in from mid-afternoon scuppering any chance of a Short-eared Owl count.
Other highlights were Pale-bellied Brent Goose, Water Rail, 4 Kingfisher, 150 Fieldfare, 50 Linnet, 4 Twite and a confiding Snow Bunting amongst the tidal wrack.
A flock of 42 Ringed Plover held a colour-ringed bird which was ringed on the Ems Estuary, Germany 12/06/15.

Single Snow Buntings can be tricky to spot when amongst tidal wrack at the dune edge
